Asbestosis Symptoms

Asbestosis is a type of pulmonary fibrosis caused by asbestos exposure. Pulmonary fibrosis is the development of excess connective tissue in the lungs. Because asbestosis develops in the lungs, the first symptoms to show up typically involve respiratory problems. The disease has a handful of symptoms, but coughing is a primary indicator, although even experienced doctors do not associate a minor cough with someone having this disease unless the patient alerts the physician to previous asbestos exposure.
Fibrosis usually occurs due to the lungs reacting to and repairing damage to lung tissue over a long period of time; such as, continuous exposure to asbestos fibers. This reparative scar tissue replaces normal lung tissue, and an excess amount of scar tissue can cause reduced pulmonary function.
